The Institute of Nuclear Energy Research
Introduction
The Institute of Nuclear Energy Research (INER) is a national institute
specialized in nuclear technology R&D. The institute is under the administration
of the Atomic Energy Council (AEC) in the Executive Yuan. INER is located
in scenic Lungtan, Taoyuan, close to Shihmen Dam. In the past years, under
the guidance of the AEC, INER's goals have been set as: to apply nuclear
technology, to improve civilian welfare, and to assure nuclear safety.
The R&D efforts in INER can be classified into five fields: nuclear
engineering technology, nuclear safety, radiation protection and detection,
radioactive waste management, and civilian nuclear applications. The newly-established
TRR-II Project will result in long term improvement of the Taiwan Research
Reactor for new R&D applications.
For many years, in addition to the R&D on nuclear-related technology,
INER's outstanding non-nuclear achievements can be found in the fields
of medical health, resource recovery, environmental protection, public
safety and disaster prevention techniques, chemical analyses, and photoelectric
science.
In recent years, in order to promote the public understanding of nuclear
energy and lift the secrecy of nuclear R&D, INER is now entirely open
to the public. INER has put a very strong emphasis on public relations
and has eagerly wanted the public to better understand INER. In reality,
for the welfare of the public, INER's R&D results and techniques have
accumulated for the past 30 years and are already widely applied to many
projects outside of INER.
